Motoring Ahead

Taking wheel (real) action

So far, 2018 has been a big year for our business. Yet it probably shouldn't have been. That's why business is confusing and exciting at the same time. We implemented a number of changes to our business over the last year. Changes that have been in planning or discussion for a while which we 'finally' rolled out. I mean 'finally' in the naive sense of 'Are we there yet?'. Looking back now in reality we were 'almost', 'kind of', 'in some way', 'probably' 'only just ready' (Hindsight is a beautiful thing).

What 'wheely' (really) got us moving this year were two major things;

Your 'Side Hustle'

Trent Yesberg –

The 'new and improved' second job

I started my 'first business' with a mate back when we were 15 years old. We came up with the innovative business named Scott & Trent's Lawn Mowing Services. Straight to the computer we did up our pricing and flyers and as soon as they were printed, off we went on our pushies and delivered them to the neighbourhood letterboxes.

Almost straight away we received a phone call. Someone wanted us to mow their lawn! 'How easy is business?!' we thought. So we organised a time for the next weekend and began dreaming about how we were going to each spend our $15 for mowing, $15 for edges. The beauty of being young and naive is you have no shame or recognition of silly assumptions. We used our respective parents mowers and whipper snippers and advised them that we needed them to get us more fuel. Never once contemplating the concept of the costs nor the wear and tear of this to our parents. We even had some clients who let us use their equipment (and fuel!).

Perfect Work/Life Balance

Trent Yesberg –

It exists. I have found it.

Last year, my wife and our friends went on a cruise. This was the first time that we had been on a cruise and we definitely picked an amazing way to introduce ourselves to cruising, or as we liked to call it: #cruiselife. In anticipation of the first cruise ship departure leaving Townsville Port next month, I thought I would revisit a column I wrote last year.

I explained last year about how I was impressed by the systems that Royal Caribbean operate with to be able to seamlessly accommodate the needs of over 8000 people onboard. Further to this, I found I was most impressed with the facilities available, considering we were hundreds of kilometres away at sea. Then, probably the best idea I have ever had, struck me like a lightning bolt – I could actually live AND still work aboard this ship...

There's More To Life

So it's important to always remember your 'Why'

I was having a conversation with a prospective business purchaser. Discussing just general chit-chat before we got down to business talk. We were talking about 'toys' i.e. cars, boats etc., basically anything material that provides enjoyment. Now I am not really a 'car guy' nor am I anything much of a fisherman. Traditionally speaking I know enough about accounting, economics and finances to know that a car, no matter how nice (i.e. expensive) it is, is just an expense, although I really do love my car (thank you Lexus). Similarly like fishermen who really love their boat even though it is also another pure 'expense'. As we finished the chit-chat and started talking business, I said the throw away line; "Well you've got to spend your money on something…"

Paperless? Probably Less Paper

Reducing paperwork, one app at a time

Biologists say 'ecosystem' to describe a community of organisms interacting in their environment. We can use that definition with business as well. Then, in a business ecosystem, the relationships between things matter. In fact, they matter a lot. Everything touches everything else so the way that humans interact has a big effect on the system.

For The Love, Of Money

Tying the knot - Financially

If there is anything I have learned in my 34 years on this green and blue rock, it's that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. Not that I have read that book to know what that exactly refers to, but I have a hunch it's that us men think differently. Very differently. That is why it is so important, that when you are making the biggest commitment of your life, you communicate, about EVERYTHING.

Focus for your HUGE 2018

Another reason is that it’s another turning point. A close to what has (hopefully) been a successful year, with an excited anticipation of what lies ahead.
